Subject: University of Michigan Pre-MSTP Summer Program Announcement - REMINDER

Dear Colleague,

I am writing to remind you about the University of Michigan Pre-MSTP, ten week summer research program that Michigan's Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), (which is an MD/Ph.D. program) is sponsoring. The "Pre-MSTP" summer program is designed to provide an opportunity for highly motivated and talented undergraduates interested in careers as physician scientists to enhance their science and academic skills.

The program is targeted towards students who are from geographically, culturally or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, students who have experienced financial hardship, and students with disabilities.  Applicants should have completed at least their freshman undergraduate year.

The main focus of the program is laboratory biomedical research, but the program also includes physician shadowing, an MCAT prep course, and an opportunity to attend bi-weekly seminars and a 2 day MSTP retreat on Lake Erie in August.

I have attached a program announcement and application form for the program.  I would appreciate it if you could pass it along to any student groups or individual students whom you think might have an interest and would benefit.  Should you have any questions about the program please feel free to contact the MSTP Office at

mstp@umich.edu

The deadline for application submission is February 1, 2012.

Many thanks for passing the word along.

Juanita L. Merchant, M.D., Ph.D.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is offering faculty and students at Minority Serving Institutions an opportunity to participate in a ten-week summer research team experience at university-based DHS Centers of Excellence as part of its DHS Summer Research Team Program for Minority Serving Institutions. At the end of the summer, faculty participants are encouraged to apply for up to $50,000 in follow-on funding. Details about the program, including eligibility guidelines and application forms, can be found at http://www.orau.gov/dhsfaculty/. Faculty from all science, technology, engineering and math disciplines are encouraged to apply, including faculty in agricultural sciences, biological/life sciences, computer and information sciences, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, psychology, and social sciences.

Past faculty and student participants have enjoyed the summer research experience, conducted meaningful research, and made new professional connections, many of which have led to fruitful and ongoing research collaborations. Below please find profiles of some of our former participants.

The program is a terrific opportunity for faculty and students alike. If you know of anyone interested in applying to the program, please ask the potential applicant to contact me as soon as possible; my contact information is provided below. Also, if you could spread the word about this program, forward this email to any faculty who might be interested in applying, or post the contents of this email to a relevant listserv, I would greatly appreciate it. Please note the upcoming faculty application deadline of January 8, 2012. Please do not hesitate to call me if I can answer any questions or provide you with any additional information.

    Hi all,

Active Minds provides funding and support to students interested in completing research or creative projects related to mental health through our Emerging Scholars Fellowship. The
2012 Call for Proposals is currently open and we are seeking applications from undergraduate and graduate students interested in completing unique and thought-provoking work related to mental health this coming semester. If you have any research or projects you are currently working on with students or know of any students who might be interested in this opportunity, please share the information below and encourage them to apply! Please pass information on to your networks and colleagues as well.

    Funding Available: Emerging Scholars Fellowship

About the Active Minds Emerging Scholars Fellowship:  The Active Minds Emerging Scholars Fellowship, generously supported by the Scattergood Foundation for Behavioral Health, provides an opportunity for students to complete funded, independent mental health projects and to be connected with a network of young scholars and national experts in the field of behavioral health. Scholars conduct their work January-June, are connected with a project mentor who is an expert in the field, receive a $750 stipend and may apply for an additional $250 to cover project expenses. The Emerging Scholars Fellowship program aims to expand the body of literature, creative expression, and discourse devoted to mental health with a particular emphasis on issues relevant to young adult communities. The Fellowship program encourages creativity in the development of a project that reflects interest in behavioral health issues; a wide range of project types are likely to receive funding. You can learn more, see past projects and apply at www.activeminds.org/scholars.
